  • Fire Emblem, DS Top the Charts in Japan

Nintendo dominated the Japanese sales charts this week, with Wii and DS capturing the top spots in both hardware and software.

Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem narrowly topped the software chart in its first week with sales of 136,000 units. This remake of the first Super Famciom Fire Emblem game can basically be considered a sequel to the game that came to the US DS as cFire Emblem Shadow Dragon. It adds a new custom character creation feature and the ability to toggle off permadeath, meaning your allies can be made to return for subsequent battles.

Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory placed second with 136,000 units (Media Create rounds its data to units of 1,000). Victory is a Wii port of a popular card-based arcade game. Players of the arcade version can scan their current cards into the game using a 200 DSi Point DSi Ware app or their cell phone.

Also placing highly this week was the PS3 version of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2010. This is the first time Konami's big-headed baseball series has appeared on PS3. The PS3 version was released in place of last year's Wii and PS2 versions. A PSP version was also released simultaneously.

Here's the full top 10 covering July 12 through July 18. Lifetime sales are in parentheses.

    1. Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem (Nintendo, DS): 136,000

    2. Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory (Square Enix, Wii): 136,000

    3. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2010 (Konami, PS3): 120,000

    4. Wii Party (Nintendo, Wii): 113,000 (348,000)

    10. Momotaro Dentetsu Tag Match (Hudson, PSP): 19,000

Neither Dragon Quest or Fire Emblem did much to push DS and Wii sales. However, the two Nintendo platforms topped their respective categories. While PSP is technically at the top of Media Create's hardware chart, DS is the clear victor when you combine its various variations.
