• 11 States Favor California Game Law

  Showing support for California's proposed law that will prevent the sale or rental of "excessively violent" video games to minors, 11 other states have now come forward and submitted their arguments to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

   

  The states favoring the law, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia, recently submitted an amicus brief - a written argument filed by a third party - in hopes of swaying the court's decision.

   

  California state senator and author of the law, Leland Yee, recently teamed up with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the California Psychological Association to submit his own amicus brief that's been endorsed by "100 leading researchers, scientists, and scholars from around the world."

   

  Below is an except from the brief:

   

  "The interactive nature of video games is vastly different than passively listening to music, watching a movie or reading a book," it states. "This immersion results in a more powerful experience and potentially dangerous learned behavior in children and youth."

   

  "Moreover, there is a practical side in favor of the State's effort to regulate the sale or rental of violent video games to children. Parents can read a book, watch a movie or listen to a CD to discern if it is appropriate for their children."

   

  "These violent video games, on the other hand, can contain up to 800 hours of footage with the most atrocious content often reserve for the highest levels and can be accessed only by advanced players after hours upon hours of progressive mastery."

   

  Last week, Calif. Attorney General Jerry Brown submitted his argument that will be heard alongside the rest.

   

  A federal court originally shot down this law, but in April the U.S. Supreme court announced it wanted to review the decision one last time. The arguments are expected to be heard this fall.
